(Pittsfield, Mass.) The City of Pittsfield’s Upstreet Cultural District has a way to cure those winter blues this February; the sixth annual 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival, presented by Berkshire Gas, featuring a lively array of music, art, theatre, dance, comedy, film, play, fireworks and more from February 16-26, 2017 in the heart of the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.
Organized by the City of Pittsfield’s Office of Cultural Development and Barrington Stage Company, the festival features more than 50 events and highlights dozens of artists, actors, musicians, playwrights and performers. The 10X10 festival kicks off on Thursday, February 16 with three events: 10 Spot: Photography, a dual exhibition featuring 10 pieces from 10 photographers from around the country; Through the Historic Lens: 10 Pittsfield Perspectives, a collaborative exhibit between the Berkshire Historical Society and the Berkshire Athenaeum and the first preview night of Barrington Stage’s 10X10 New Play Festival.
“Winter’s chill is no match against the vibrant 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival that will warm city nights with an exciting showcase of theater, dance, poetry, and music,” stated Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer. “This festival, in its sixth year, continues to put a spotlight on Pittsfield’s creativity and artistry so be sure to mark your calendars and enjoy the very best of our great city.”
10 Spot: Photography is a dual exhibit featuring 100 photographs: 10 photographs by 10 artists on view at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts and Sohn Fine Art Gallery in Lenox. The exhibits highlight each photographer’s conceptual and aesthetic vision. With mostly emerging photographers, the show reveals their work at a pinnacle point of growth, when their voice has become strong and recognized. The series range from a span of “types” of portrait work and abstractions from literal objects, to serene uninhabited rural landscapes. Click here for more information.
Jacob’s Pillow Dance joins the 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival for the first time this year with a dance for social justice workshop and lecture/demonstration. “We’re excited to be a part of 10 x 10 for the first time, and to bring Marsha Parilla and her company to the Boys & Girls Club,” says Jacob’s Pillow Director Pamela Tatge. “We need the bridge-building and healing power of art and artists now more than ever.” Danza Orgánica, a Boston-based Contemporary Dance Theater Company directed by choreographer Marsha Parrilla, will lead the Dance for Social Justice Movement Workshop for youth, teens and adults. All levels are welcome. A lecture/demonstration performance from her work Running in Stillness will follow the workshop. These events are FREE and open to the public. Click here for more information.
The Berkshire Athenaeum and the Berkshire Historical Society are joining forces for Through the Historic Lens: 10 Pittsfield Perspectives, a photography exhibit featuring works from each of the organization’s permanent collections. The Links for Literacy event at the Athenaeum will have a 10×10 theme this year as well.
WordXWord will be offering two 10×10 events: 10 New Voices at the Berkshire Museum and the First Annual 10×10 Invitational Poetry Slam at the Whitney Center for the Arts. Dottie’s Coffee Lounge will feature the 10×10 Chairity: Take a Seat! event featuring 10+ upcycled chairs. Participating artists include: Marguerite Bride; Jan Charbonneau; Diane Firtell; Scott Taylor and more! The chairs will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Pittsfield Education Foundation. Berkshire Yoga Dance and Fitness and Berkshire Running Center are bringing fitness to the 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival with free yoga and group runs.
“The 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival is a great example of collaboration between art and cultural organizations from Pittsfield and beyond,” stated Jen Glockner, the director of cultural development for the City of Pittsfield. “Each year continues to bring new and exciting partners, increasing the breadth of the Festival.”
