A Christmas Carol Special Community and Sensory-Friendly Performance @ Colonial Theatre
Dec 12 @ 6:00 PM
A Christmas Carol Special Community and Sensory-Friendly Performance @ Colonial Theatre | Pittsfield | Massachusetts | United States

Celebrate the timeless holiday tradition of A Christmas Carol with the whole family, and revel in the joy and redemptive power of Christmas as told in the timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, the infamous miser who is shown the error of his ways and reformed by four spirits. Journey back to Victorian England and experience the classic story filled with holiday carols and the wonderment of the season.

Berkshire Theatre Group presents a special community and sensory-friendly performance of A Christmas Carol on Wednesday, December 12 at 6pm, at The Colonial Theatre. A “sensory-friendly” performance is a production that is slightly modified to accommodate individuals with sensory-input disorders, such as people on the autism spectrum. At this performance, you will notice relaxed “house rules;” people may need to get up, move around, and leave the theatre during the performance. There is no expectation that the audience will be completely quiet during the performance. Our goal is to create an environment where people with autism or sensory needs, along with their families, can enjoy coming to the theatre together and will feel comfortable, supported and free to be themselves.

Bernard Baran: Freeing an Innocent Pittsfield Man After 22 Years @ Berkshire Athenaeum
Dec 12 @ 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Bernard Baran: Freeing an Innocent Pittsfield Man After 22 Years @ Berkshire Athenaeum | Pittsfield | Massachusetts | United States

On October 6, 1984, Bernard Baran, a 19-year-old openly gay daycare worker, was arrested in Pittsfield MA on two counts of sexual assault and battery of a child. A month later, after a grand jury viewed heavily edited video footage of child interviews, he was indicted on five counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault. After a week-long jury trial beginning in January 1985, he was found guilty on all counts, sentenced to three concurrent life terms, and remanded to the maximum security Cedar Junction facility at Walpole MA.
Shunted from one correctional facility to the next, repeatedly raped, beaten, and otherwise abused, Bernard Baran steadfastly maintained his innocence. After spending 22 years in prison, Baran was freed under probationary conditions in 2006, and finally cleared by the Massachusetts Appeals Court in 2009. After five years of freedom, he died suddenly in 2014.

At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at the Berkshire Athenaeum, the Pittsfield Human Rights Commission invites the public to revisit this tragic case, with a presentation from three of Baran’s principal advocates:

  • Robert B. Chatelle, founder and executive director of the National Center for Reason and Justice, co-founder of the Bernard Baran Justice Committee
  • James D’Entremont, journalist and playwright, former staff writer for The Guide, first reporter to cover the Baran case in the LGBT press.
  • John Swomley, Boston-based criminal defense attorney, head of Bernard Baran’s legal team from 1999 onward. His advocacy on behalf of indigent defendants won him the Paul Liacos Mental Health Advocacy Award in 2000.

David Grover @ Colonial Theatre | Pittsfield | Massachusetts | United States

David Grover spent many years as Arlo Guthrie’s lead guitar and band leader playing for adults, but it wasn’t until he had a daughter that he found his true calling: playing for children and families. David has performed at the White House, opened the Goodwill Games, appeared on The Today Show and performed with the Detroit Symphony for their Youth Series.  He has recently played for the delegates of the United Nations, who gleefully did the hand motions of Grover’s song “Turn the World Around” at the kickoff of International Year of Clean Water. In additional to his incredible talent, he is also an extraordinary human being. The numbers of variously challenged kids and their families who count themselves among the Grover Groupies are also his friends and serve as testament to his ongoing commitment to making quality music accessible to all children.
