CAROL KINZEL: Views of the Village @ Hancock Shaker Village
Apr 16 – Oct 30 all-day
CAROL KINZEL: Views of the Village @ Hancock Shaker Village | Pittsfield | Massachusetts | United States

On view now, in the Center for Shaker Studies Gallery, are three paintings of  Hancock Shaker Village (HSV) by Carol Kinzel, created when she was just 22 (circa 1950). They capture a time when HSV was in deep decline, before its transition from Shaker ownership to its current status as a museum.

Carol went on to become Nelson A. Rockefeller’s personal art curator, and met New York art photographer Charles Uht (who became her husband) through this association. A photo album with 1950s images by Mr. Uht was recently discovered in the HSV library.

Carol’s three paintings were on sale at a Pittsfield Art League show in the early 1950s, and have been reunited nearly 66 years later for the exhibition. The striking paintings offer a rare artist’s interpretation of HSV under Shaker ownership.

With your help we’ll prepare some heaping salads for some of our largest reptiles as we discuss what the aquarium animals eat here in the museum and what they would find in the wild. Once all the food is prepared, watch as aquarium staff goes behind the scenes to feed the reptiles and fish. See the seahorses suck up tiny shrimp and watch as the tortoises devour the salads you helped make just minutes before. In between feedings we’ll talk more about each species and what they’re eating, as well as answer many questions you might have, like what exactly is a skink and why is it eating a monkey biscuit!
