Berkshire Museum presents BerkshireNow: Joan Palano Ciolfi, @ Berkshire Museum
Jun 5 – Aug 30 all-day

[Pittsfield, Mass.] – The new BerkshireNow gallery space at the Berkshire Museum features a show of vivid, color-rich paintings by Joan Palano Ciolfi, June 5 through August 30, 2015. The BerkshireNow gallery is open during regular Museum hours. In addition, Berkshire Museum is part of Pittsfield’s monthly First Fridays Artswalk events, when admission to the BerkshireNow gallery will be free to the public, from 5 to 8 p.m., on June 5, July 3, and August 7.

Joan Palano Ciolfi’s paintings are expressive oils infused with energy and texture. Her work is vibrant and atmospheric and is many times inspired by her Berkshire County surroundings. “Painting allows me to share my passion for color, which is essential to my imagery,” says Ciolfi. “My work focuses on light, texture, and composition to create both abstract and realistic images of dramatic landscapes, open skies, and intricate objects found all around us.” Ciolfi’s BerkshireNow show features recent works, all completed in the last two years. The abstract landscapes are based on Berkshire views, with trees and clouds interpreted with layers of texture in saturated, deep colors. The abstract paintings are an explosion of energy, mimicking, in some cases, swooping loops of expressive handwriting.

Trained in fine arts, graphics, and textile design, Ciolfi has explored the use of various mediums. Her brilliant use of simple images and powerful interplay of light convey stillness and breathtaking beauty. Currently she uses a technique of oil sticks, paints and brushes on canvas or board to create paintings that express and share her passion for color.

Ciolfi has had solo exhibits in Cambridge and Lenox, and has shown her work in galleries and group exhibits throughout New England and New York. Her work has been published nationally and collected throughout the United States. Ciolfi started her art and design career at Berkshire Community College and holds a BFA in visual design from UMass Dartmouth.

About BerkshireNow

BerkshireNow features four exhibits each year ranging from solo artists to group shows. The BerkshireNow gallery is a high traffic, high visibility space located adjacent to the front lobby outside of Spark!Lab. Outfitting the nine-hundred-square-foot gallery space for the new exhibition series was made possible in part by a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council.

BerkshireNow is designed to showcase the work of artists living in the Berkshires. Selection is by invitation from the Museum, based on alignment with the Museum’s mission and existing exhibitions programming. Artists eligible for BerkshireNow exhibits include, but are not limited to, those working in experimental, 2D, 3D and new media, craft, photographers, and graphic design. BerkshireNow exhibits will include solo and group shows curated by the Museum, as well as group shows organized by art organizations.

Lost in Yonkers is a heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age story by America’s great comic playwright, Neil Simon. Like many of Simon’s plays, Lost in Yonkers is drawn from his experiences growing up in New York City. Set during World War II, two young brothers, Arty and Jay, are sent to live with their formidable German Jewish immigrant grandmother, the sweet but mentally challenged Aunt Bella, and Uncle Louie, a small-time hoodlum running away from gangsters. Lost in Yonkers is sponsored by Norma and Sol Kugler.

Join our staff in the aquarium for an interactive look at what it takes to feed some of Berkshire Museum’s most interesting residents. With your help we’ll prepare some heaping salads for some of our largest reptiles as we discuss what the aquarium animals eat here in the museum and what they would find in the wild. Once all the food is prepared, watch as aquarium staff goes behind the scenes to feed the reptiles and fish. See the seahorses suck up tiny shrimp and watch as the tortoises devour the salads you helped make just minutes before. In between feedings we’ll talk more about each species and what they’re eating, as well as answer many questions you might have, like what exactly is a skink and why is it eating a monkey biscuit!

Girl Friday @ Boyd-Quinson Mainstage
Aug 6 @ 2:00 AM – Aug 30 @ 9:00 PM

Adapted by John Guare from The Front Page by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur and the Columbia Pictures film
Directed by Julianne Boyd

Editor Walter Burns will do anything to find an ace reporter cunning enough to scoop a story in the cutthroat Chicago press world, even if that means turning to his ex-wife, Hildy Johnson, who comes back to the newsroom one last time before leaving the game for good. In Guare’s adaptation, the play takes place in 1939, the day before war breaks out in Europe, which adds a political framework to the otherwise antic proceedings.

Associate Artist Christopher Innvar stars as Walter Burns alongside fellow Associate Artist Mark H. Dold, who will star as Bruce Baldwin, Hildy Johnson’s fiancé. Complete casting will be announced at a later date.

Tony Award-winner John Guare is the author of such plays as The House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation, A Free Man of Color, and Two Gentlemen of Verona. His most recent play, 3 Kinds of Exile, also marked his acting debut.

His Girl Friday is sponsored by Rhoda Herrick. His Girl Friday  is also sponsored in part by Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club.
